Is MRSA A Contagious Disease?

My husband has MRSA with red spots that are popping and pussing. I was just told i also have mrsa, however mine just are red spots not open at all, just itchy. Is my skin contagious for my 5 year old son to be touching even know there are NO open areas or fluids?

Hi,

It is common for people with MRSA to pass it on to other people, but most of the time people who have MRSA do not have an infection or any symptoms, they just carry it, usually in their nose or throat. Then, when the immune system is weakened, or for other unknown reasons, MRSA can cause skin infections like yours and your husbands, or can cause even more serious infections.

So, I would advise your son not to touch your rash if possible, as I think it would increase his chances of picking it up. However, he may already be carrying it by now. Once your infections clear, you might ask your doctor about trying to clear the MRSA bacteria from all of your bodies.

While the evidence isn't clear that it's always helpful, I would consider talking to your doctor about it. It usually involves daily washes with an antibiotic for about a week.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Yes Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is contagious. It may spread by direct contact from the skin. So, it is very necessary to avoid contact with your baby. Even sometimes we recommend drugs to all people who are in close contact with a person having MRSA.

So you can talk to your doctor if your child may need drug to avoid catching the infection. Hand wash is of extreme importance in minimizing the risk of transmission of MRSA.

Hope I have answered your query.
