Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! My 5 year old son is having Fever (103.5 C) and Crocin is not giving relief. I ll take him to the doctor in the evening. Meanwhile, can I give him Meftal-P? Crocin was last given at 2 PM. At what time can I give Meftal-P now? Is Meftal-P safe in case the fever turns out to be due to Dengue, though no other Dengue symptom is present as of now.
Yes, Meftal-P can be given to children with high fever. If fever is not responding to Crocin or recurs more frequently (less than 6 hours), Meftal-P can be given at 6 PM.
Meftal P contains Mefenamic acid which can be given at 4 to 6.5 mg/kg per dose (maximum 25 mg/kg/day) three times daily.
Along with the medications tepid sponging should be done to lower the raised body temperature. Give him plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.
Consult your pediatrician for evaluation of cause of fever as viral fever usually starts subsiding after 3-4 days.
Since Meftal-P can cause gastritis or bleeding hence it is not advisable to be continued if the fever turns out be due to Dengue. In that case Crocin alone is recommended.
Hope this answers your query.
