Is Melatonin Intake Safe After An Open Heart Surgery?

I am 87 years old - have had open heart surgery twice, triple by-pass, two valve replacements, maze procedure. I used Melatonin Wednesday night and had 8 hours of sleep. Felt good. Used Melatonin last night and have not slept at all - now 2:23 AM.. Is Melatonin safe for me, and why did it work one night and not the next?

Hi,

As such melatonin is safe for Heart patients. So you can take it without fear. But it is not a good drug for postoperative insomnia.

So better to consult a psychiatrist for Prescription of Alprazolam or Zolpidem for better night sleep.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
