Pain Medicine & Palliative Care Specialist, Dr. Matthew Jones's Response
Hello,
Celecoxib drug is safer for the stomach than any other anti-inflammatory approved in the US. It is what we call a COX 2 inhibitor, which means it does not stop the body's production of chemicals call prostaglandins that have protective qualities for the stomach.
Meloxicam drug has some of the COX 2 inhibition property, but not to the extent that Celecoxib does, so it is not as likely to be as safe for the stomach. Some of my patients find Meloxicam effective.
Many of them take 7.5 mg twice a day or 15mgs once a day instead of 7.5 mg once a day. The physician is always in charge of the dose.
The patient should always let the physician know how well a new drug is working. Then the physician can decide if the dose is right, or if the drug is the correct drug.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Matthew Jones
