Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Metformin Intake Necessary To Conceive While Having PCOS?
I have been diagnosed with pcos have 2 miscarriage before finding out I had pcos been prescribed metformin in 2006 had two live births. Stop taking metformin about 3 years ago. My periods have been normal. My question is. Would I have to get back on metformin to be able to get pregnant again.
Metformin indeed helps in PCOS. But there is no rule that people with PCOS always need Metformin for conceiving. You say you have 2 kids already and your periods are regular which is good news. Please follow the below advice
1) Weight Loss ( if you are over weight ) - is the key.
2) Metformin (helps you in decreasing insulin resistance ) - that would be a 2nd option if your doctor feels but its not kind of mandatory to use Metformin to conceive.
3) If Metformin and weight loss doesn't work = your doctor may put you on a drug called Clomiphene (which helps in induction of ovulation). So, here is the take home - exercise, stay healthy, and go ahead with your plans.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Samuel Sathwik
