Is Metoprolol Tartate Different From Metoprolol Succinate ER?

Hello - Could you tell me the difference between Metoprolol Tartate and Metoprolol Succinate ER ? I ve been told that the Succinate is simply a time release medication, rather than a single dose like the Tartate. However I do not know if you can use either without complications. Without explanation the Tartate that my wife has been taking for years was suddenly changed to Succinate. We don t mind the price difference this time but do not want to take anything harmful. Thanks

Hello,

Metoprolol is a cardio selective beta blocker commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain) and other conditions.

The branded preparations of Metoprolol tartrate and Metoprolol succinate both contain the active medication Metoprolol and thus produce the same therapeutic effects.

However, Metoprolol succinate is an extended-release tablet, it slow releases the daily dose over a 24-hour period, and hence it has to be taken once daily.

Whereas Metoprolol tartrate is an immediate-release tablet, it releases over a 12-hour period, it doesn’t stay in the body as long as metoprolol succinate does hence it has to be taken twice a day with each dose being half of the total daily milligrams you need.

Although they both treat high blood pressure and chest pain, these drugs aren’t interchangeable. They are dosed differently.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
