Is Mycobacterium Avium Complex Infection Contagious?
A friend was being treated for Mycobacterium Aviam , sarcoidosis with prednisone, and azathioprine and the last of the sputum tests came back moderate positive gram cocci basilli, poly morpho neuclear with rare gm neg basilli. Dr. stopped the prednisone and the Imuran and put her on two antibiotics and will start a third next week. Is this contagious? Is it staph or strep? We are her care givers

It is a bacterial infection and is a variant of tuberculosis bacteria and is different from staph/strep. It is contagious and you have to wear mask while taking care of him.
Consult a physician and start the treatment at the earliest. It is a curable condition and respond well with timely antibiotics.
