Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Greetings, I recently read a paper about Naloxone that suggested the only real benefit of the drug was allowing the lung and or chest muscles to allow air back into the lungs when confronted with a heroin overdose. If this is the case, why would it not be sufficient to simply force o2 (via an o2 air tank or what not) directly back into the lungs?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Naloxone is an antidote for opioid overdose. It act at a cellular level of neurotransmitters in brain and help to over come the respiratory depression. In heroin over dose there may be loss of oxygen drive that is corrected only by Naloxone and not by direct oxygen.
Wishing you good health.
Thanks
