Hi I am a 44 yrs old married women.I have been experiencing UTI time and again which get cured once i take antibiotic course. This time doctor has prescribed me to take Niftron 100 mg for 6 to 8 weeks. Is it safe to take this antibiotic for so long and will it get cured for ever.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
This is not a usual period for antibiotic course and also I don’t think this is necessary. It would be better option to do urinoculture and then prescribe antibiotic for specific type of bacteria which can be taken for 1 to 2 weeks. Also, better solution would be Ciprofloxacin or Amoxicillin unless there is a resistant bacteria. But in most cases this is caused by E coli bacteria.
If there is a negative urine analysis then you should do ultrasound of kidneys to check for stones. You should drink plenty of fluids and take raspberry tea or juice to promote urination in next 2 weeks as well.
If you have already started Nitrofurantoin then you should finish the 2 weeks course.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
