Is Omeprazole Considered An Antacid?

Hi Doc: I ve been prescribed omerprazole for awhile & take it at night. I ve been recently prescribed gabapentin (neurontin) & take this a night along with the omerprazole. The neurontin was just refilled & I read over the attached info & it says, Don t take antacids either 2 hours before or after while taking this drug . Is omerprazole considered an antacid?

Hello,

Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) reducing acid production in stomach and is different from antacids like magnesium carbonate in mechanism of action.

Gabapentin interacts with antacids but regarding omeprazole; many references report no significant interaction between omeprazole and gabapentin though some studies report decreased intestinal absorption of gabapentin when taken at same time with PPIs.

That is why it is recommended that both drugs should be taken at least 2 hours apart.
