Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
Omeprazole is not harmful for a person with
hiatus hernia.
The symptoms of heart burn and
stomach upset in a person with hiatus hernia are due to reflux of the stomach acid into the food pipe or mouth.
The treatment of hiatus hernia involves certain lifestyle changes and medication.
Omeprazole is the most effective in blocking the acid production and also to promote healing of the damaged food pipe lining. Whereas Zantac is effective in inhibiting the acid production in the stomach.
You need to have certain lifestyle changes that may help control the symptoms of
acid reflux caused by a hiatal hernia.
1. Eat several smaller meals throughout the day rather than a few large meals.
2. Avoid foods that trigger heartburn, such as chocolate, onions, spicy foods, citrus fruits and tomato-based foods.
3. Avoid alcohol & smoking
4. Eat at least two to three hours before bedtime.
5. Lose weight if you're
overweight or obese.
6. Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches (about 15 centimeters).
Surgical treatment would be considered if you have persistent & troublesome symptoms, but don't want to take medication on a long-term basis.
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful.
