Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my wife has congenital very high bilirubin issue(14 to 20).Doctor have adviced phenobarbitone tablets throughout life.latest she had a misscariage.i spoke with gastro specialist and he adviced to take risk and maintain bilirubin at 4 to 8 with regular pheno tablet.is taking this tablet risky during pregnancy and if yes can this b avoided or is their any alternative option during pregnancy ? so that child is safe.
Phenobarbitone is not recommended in pregnancy. It's use in first and last trimester of pregnancy is associated with teratogenic or congenital birth defects in the fetus and withdrawal effects in newborn. So it's usage during pregnancy is certainly risky. But there is no better option than phenobarbitone to reduce the bilirubin levels. As your gastro doctor said, you may need to take the risk for keeping bilirubin levels in check. Kindly consult your obstetrician once and discuss the issue.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
