Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Okay, so a year and half ago I had severe PCOS. I have been taking glucophage for all this time as prescribed by a doctor, I am now 14 weeks pregnant. 5 years ago I miscarried and after that I conceived now. I have two children last one 12 years ago. I am 35 years. From 7 weeks pregnancy doctor prescribed me with cyclogest and now duphaston. But I have just found out that progesterone intake has been banned in US. Because of fetal death and other side affects. So I wanted to know exactly how safe it is for me to use? Do I really need it?
Hello, Thanks for the query. Progesterone is actually required for proper maintenance of pregnancy in the early part. So it is used either as oral or inravaginal drug. There is really no reason to worry about it causing any harm. as the following lines explain: "Available evidence suggests that the most common forms of progesterone supplementation are safe in early pregnancy. Earlier reports of a possible link between exposure to progestogens and an increased risk for hypospadias have been discounted since the few cases involved were with high doses of progestins derived from androgens. The FDA conducted a thorough review of the relevant published studies, and they found that there is no increase in Congenital anomalies including genital abnormalities in male or female infants resulting form maternal exposure to progesterone or 17 α- hydroxyprogesterone in early pregnancy". I hope I have cleared your doubt. Thanks.
