Is Prolia A Correct Medicine For Osteoporosis?

My doctor wants to start me on Prolia for newly diagnosed osteoporosis. I was diagnosed with osteopenia 10 years ago, was treated with Fosamax for 5 years, showed some improvement, and went on drug holiday. I have been hypothyroid (and on meds for it) for decades. Is that a contraindication? I have not had an osteoporatic fracture. At what DEXA score would you recommend Prolia over say, going back on Fosamax? After reading on NOF site, I also wonder whether a year or 2 on Forteo first would be a good idea? Maybe its side effects are less worrisome--as long as the bone cancer risk doesn t seem to be a factor. Thank you! Hard to sort through the pros and cons. Will sit down to discuss it with my doctor, of course (just got the phone results of the scan). But I ve only been seeing her for a year, so haven t built up a real therapeutic relationship yet.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Prolia contains denosumab, which is a monoclonal antibody. It is used to treat osteoporosis in post-menopausal women and in men, who have high risk of bone fracture.
The recommended dose of Prolia is 60 mg, which is administered as a single subcutaneous injection once every 6 months.
Hence, it is proper medicine for osteoporosis. Thyroid disorders are not an contraindication for its use.
Kindly take the medication as advised.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
