Is Prolia Effective In The Treatment Of Osteoporosis?

15 years ago Actonel triggered my atrial fib. An ablation cured that. No more drugs, just good vegetarian diet/w/fish and execcise - now my osteoporosis T-score total is -3.9 in my spine, and -2.9 in my hip neck (up from -3.6 2 years ago due to the exercise I m sure. My doc. wants me to take Prolia but experience w/Actonel made me skittish and Prolia still can have gruesome side effects. Is thee a truly safe RX? Can more exercise, good diet and supplements continue to be a good option for me? My spine score is worrisome. I had 3 1/2 parathyroid glands removed 3 years ago. Thanks for your help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Given those scores I am afraid medication is necessary. Measures such as exercise, diet and supplements are not enough. Naturally there is no drug without potential side effects, but side effects are rare. Before starting it, it must be made sure you don't have low calcium levels which is a possibility given your parathyroid gland issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
