Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Protonix Effective In The Treatment Of Difficulty In Swallowing?
My son has problem with swallowing food, especially foods such as mac n cheese. I suggested he try protonix because it helped my elderly mother who suffered with continuous burping while using the medicine, dexalent. Recently while in the hospital the doctor replaced dexalent with protonix and immediately she stopped burping. Will protonix help my son. He had his esophagus stretched and help for a short while.
* The remedy of difficulty in swallowing for your elderly mother was related to muscular dysfunction of lower esophagus area and your son does not seemingly have same issue and hence same medication is not warranted at all.
* In most of the instances in pediatric age group, there is underlying viral or bacterial respiratory infection, tonsillitis or others which reveal the difficulty in swallowing and hence must be presented to pediatrician rather than self-treating.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
