Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve been taking Prilosec for over ten years and it has proven to be very helpful. Now I understand that it might cause dementia. My doctor has switched me to ranitidine but it isn t very effective. I m 75 years old. What advice would you give? Thank you, Sandra
You are a senior person who was with long term omeprazole(prilosec)now changed to ranitidine and not very effective.
Long term omeprazole is not advisable as it might also lead to anaemia and reduced bone strength.
So continue ranitidine and adapt certain modification in lifestyle like make your meal small bland and frequent, include probiotics in diet like yogurt adapt erect posture for half an hour u can go for slow walk after food.
Incase not improved,go for an in person consultation with doctor and ask for antacids.
Hope this input helps.
Take care.
