Is Risperidone Effective?

My mum is in a nursing home with dementia and has just been prescribed risperidone twice daily at 1.5 ml a day, she has been on this for a week and l have seen a great turn around, the doctor at the nursing home prescribed this, my mum is 70, and l am not sure if this is right, as l have read that it is not good with people with dementia, so l am not sure if this is wrong or right, l have also been told that my mum can change back at anytime, thank you

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is true that anti psychotics are not normally recommended for elderly persons because of the increased risk of mortality in some persons.

The increased mortality is due to increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

These events may not occur in everyone and it is possible that your mother may have only benefits from the medication.
At the moment there no effective alternatives .

You should consider speaking to the doctor about your concerns.

I hope this helps
