Is Robitussin Advisable For Severe Cough In An Elderly Person?

Hi, my 85 year old mother-in-law is visiting from London. She has a terrible mucus cough so I bought some Robitussin (Dextromethorphan HBr). But now see it may have an interaction with her Parkinsons meds. She is on Pramipexole and Stalevo for PArkinsons. And Bisoprolol Fumarate and Iosartan for something else (?). She almost went blue coughing today so I wanted to give her something tonight. Can I give her the Robitussin?

Hi, thanks for your question. I can understand your concerns after reading your mother-in-law's condition.

Answer: There is no known/significant interaction of ROBITUSSIN with any of the medications she is taking. However, there could be interactions amongst her medications for which close monitoring is required.

You can give Robitussin to her for cough relief, however, it would be better that she sees a doctor who will examine her chest for any possible infection because you have mentioned that she is producing mucus with cough.

On the other hand it might be a hypersensitivity-related cough.

Hope this helps. And please ask for any further clarification if needed.
