Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Started taking SAMe for depression and also for osteoarthritis which seems to be helping the depression and not sure if helping joints cause also going to PT for that. Anyway is SAMe addictive? Also Should I also be taking any other vitamins with the SAMe. I do prefer supplements over taking prescription antidepressants or pain meds since I have a sister who was put on prescription drugs for years and is now also on Risperdal but seems to be only getting worse. She is now paranoid, thinks people are out to get her, says she hears voices, etc. Can she take SAMe without causing side effects or drug interactions? I m hoping for a miracle cure for her.
S adenosylmethionine is a naturally occurring chemical in human body. It is not addictive. However it is always advised that medicines should be taken on required basis. If you can manage without it its always good but discuss with your doctor before trying this.
In case of your sister I would advise you to kindly visit the doctor (psychiatrist) rather than trying s adenosylmethionine. Self medication is risky affair in case of multiple and complicated health related issues.
I wish you and your sister a rapid recovery and healthy living.
