Is Sandostatin Effective In Treatment Of Chronic Pancreatitis?
I have been treated for chronic pancreatitis and acute pancreatitis since 1978. Since 1992 I have been self-injected Sandodtatin and Sandostatin Lar Depot. My pancreas is now becoming atrophied. The Sa dostatin LAR Depot has had an amazing affect on relieving diarrhea, nausea, and acute attacks. medicare no longer covers the use of Sandostatin LAR Depot and due to the cost I have had to discontinue treatments and gone back to the self-injected type.it is much less affective on the diarrhea, nausea and acute attacks. I also have IBS. Is there a y evidence of Sandostatin LAR as an effective treatment for my condition.
Sandostatin is basically used to treat acromegaly , and reduce flushing episodes and watery diarrhea caused by cancerous tumors. It has no direct effect in treatment of chronic pancreatitis (just symptomatic relief). Pancreatic enzyme replacement is therapy that replaces enzymes, the production of which is reduced because of the disease process of pancreatitis. The goal of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy is to control diarrhea and help the patient stabilize his/her body weight. These enzymes are critical to manage malabsorption. Hence , you can consult your physician and take pancreatic enzymes.
