Is Sporadic Fatal Insomnia Related With Nervousness, Fidgety And Lightheadedness?
Hi, I suddenly developed insomnia and I have a history of anxiety. My anxiety isn t that I m actually worried about anything but I have an urge to be nervous and fidgety for no reason. I ve never had insomnia until now. I ve been taking 50 mg trazodone for sleep at night and 20 mg paxil to remain calm during the day. I ve been on both meds for 2 months now and I don t feel much improvement. I sleep at night but it still takes longer than it should to fall alseep and I still wake up at least once during the night. My doctor told me to continue taking the meds for 5 months but I feel lightheaded and just weird most days. I don t know what to do. Could it be sporadic fatal insomnia?
Trazodone is a poor agent to treat insomnia unless the cause of the insomnia is known and the use of the trazodone is planned to be very short term. Otherwise, the medication itself can and does cause worsening of the insomnia due to a phenomenon called tachyphylaxis SFI is an extremely rare entity and you are ascribing much too much importance to the very NONSPECIFIC symptoms to make a diagnosis. FFI is a prion disease which can be suspected CLINICALLY on the basis of a neurological examination and history together with neuropsychological studies and EEG spectral analysis as well as genetic studies from the blood. Imaging studies of MRI and PET scanning can also be supportive. You may wish to ask for a referral to a neurologist who specializes in prion diseases in order to see you and then, help explain your symptoms based upon testing results.
