Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi baby boy is 7 months old and just finished his antibiotics course today morning (he was coughing and vomitting). Now his vomitting is under control but he still has diarrhoea and was advised Sporlac. We are travelling overseas tomorrow- will Sporlac help to settle diarrhoea? Are we ok to travel? Baby is otherwise cheerful and is on breast feed. Please advice. Thanks
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern. Yes sporolac is advised post antibiotic therapy in infants. Sporolac contains spores of lactobacillus bacteria which are normally present in gut and help in digestion of milk and milk products. Antibiotic therapy which is intended to kill micro-organism for diarrhea have deplishing effect on these useful bacteria present in gut.
Therefore taking sporolac would replenish stores of these bacteria and would aid in improving digestion of the infant. Therefore I would suggest you to give sporolac as prescribed by your doctor. Do not give anything, even water, except breast feed to your infant. This is major cause of diarrhea in infants. Breast milk is free from micro-organism and easy to digest for infant.
Any other milk or formulation could contain bacteria which could make your infant ill again. Refer to your child specialist or pediatrician.
Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Vivek Goyal
