Is Tizanidine The Right Medicine For Back Spasms?

My mother is 93 & has suffered from back spasms for decades. Her internist prescribed 4mg tizanidine 3x/day. It makes her dizzy, so my sister, who Mom stays with most of the time will let Mom have the medicine only at bedtime. That doesn t seem to do Mom s back any good, so my solution is to try cutting the pills in half. We have a pill cutter, & see if she builds up a tolerance to it. Mom stays with us part of the time. Is that reasonable, or should we ask the doctor for another drug? Thanks for your time. Rae McCartney

Hi,

Yes, that's a good idea to initially start with a low dose. We generally start with 2 mg 2 times, and many times it is sufficient. So you can give her half tablet 2 times a week then increased to 3 times if needed. If she is still dizzy then you should ask her dr to change it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
