Is Topiramate Taken For The Treatment Of Bipolar Disorder?
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Depression back in 1992. I was seeing a psychololgist on a regular basis and she told me that she thought I should go to the doctor for depression treatment and she felt that I had probably been depressed most of my life. I went to see the doctor and relayed the psychologists concerns and my symtoms. I had had a severe back injury about 2 years earlier in my thorasic spine right between my shoulder blades and was in constant pain as well. When the doctor checked me over she said she thought I had Fibromyalgia. This was when this disease was pretty much unknown and it was impossible to find out any information about it. I guess it now falls under the cusp of chronic pain syndrome. Initially I had to switch Doctors because of insurance and the new docotor prescribe Hydrocodone 3 x/day. It helped with the pain but i did still had some but not the same intensity. It really helped my mental status because my energy was greatly increased and my depression lessened somewhat. I was on the hydrocodone for about 5 years and decided I want to go off of it because of all the negative information about addiction. I was physiologiically addicted but not psychologically addictied to the point that I was out pill seeking from other doctors or hitting the streets to find it. After a long hard battle I finally kicked it and the doctor prescribed Nuerontion. It helps but I am still in pain. I recently went to a new psychriatirst as mine retired and the new one prescribed Toprimate because the Nuerontin has been giving me stomach pain. He said to try this, along with the Neurontin, and we could figure out which was the best fit for my condition. When I just read the rxllist description of Toprimate it said it was for bipolar disease. Is that correct? I have never been diagnosed with that before and it freaks me out. Can you advise me?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is a safe antiepileptic. It damps down brain activity. It can be useful for a variety of conditions. If nerves are involved in pain it has some change of working but there are better drugs out there. It can be very good for migraine prevention and it is somewhat helpful in bipolar. There was a recent article that purported to show some brain damping down by topiramate to cause slight sleepiness and lowering manual test results but what it mainly showed was an improvement in test taking ability if control/caution was needed. As such, it might be very helpful in bipolar. It has few problems with it.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
