Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Trazadone Advisable Along With Citalopram For Insomnia And Depression?
I have trouble sleeping and also have depression. I am currently taking Citalopram. I went to see my Dr last week because of my sleep issues as well as depression. She perscribed me to take Trazadone. Is it safe to take both, and I am experiencing side effects already that are uncomfortable. Dry eyes, congestion, very dry skin. What would you recommend instead of Trazodone? Thank you
It is not safe to take trazadone while on citalopram. Taking trazadone while on citalopram can increase the risk of a serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which can cause confusion, hallucination, seizure, increased heart rate / blood pressure, fever, excessive sweating, shivering, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In its severe form it may result in coma and even death. I would recommend a low dose alprazolam for insomnia at bed time.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
