Is Tylenol Effective In The Treatment Of Painful Osteoarthritis?

Yes, hope so. I want to stop pain meds for my osteoarthitis, Nabumetone, Aleve, Advil. They cause, bleeding under the skin on my arms. I have had all major joints replaced but am still teaching and active. Can I get through my pain with Tylenol? Is that a better choice all around for me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Tylenol is usually used to treat mild to moderate pain in osteoarthritis. It relieves pain but does not treat the inflammation which is present in the joints. The medications you mentioned are used for more intense pain and also treat inflammation, and I assume your pain exceed the moderate level.
You can certainly use Tylenol to decrease the pain, but I'm afraid you will not get the desired relief. On the other hand, I understand that using anti-inflammatory medication comes with lots of side effects and this is a double edged sort of situation. And of course, Tylenol itself is not without side effects.
Besides exercise and weight loss (if weight is a problem in your case), what I recommend, is you opt for Tylenol, and supplement with alternative treatment, such as capsaicin creams, hot and cold packs and physiotherapy. You can also inquire with your doctor about using a TENS machine.
I hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best.
