Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my significant other recently saw the doctor about a change in his gout medication. I am telling him the doctor told him to replace the allopurinol 300 with uloric 40 and to take the indomethacin 50 mg 1 to 2 times a day for now as a preventive and increase to 3-4 times a day during a gout flare. (Doctor was specific on the changing dose from 1-4 depending on flare) My significant others says that is not what was said that the doctor wanted him to take the allopurinol 300 and replace the indomethacin 50 with the Uloric 40. Both allopurinol and uloric are once a day. I say the allopurinol and uloric are the same as in they have the same function. Can you help with this? I do plan to contact the Doctor Monday, but I don t want him taking medicines incorrectly which he has been doing for the last 5 days.
You are right that allopurinol and Uloric are the same kinds of medication, they both lower uric acid levels in patients with gout. So your significant other should be taking either allopurinol or Uloric, but not both. Taking Uloric with the indomethacin is likely what the doctor intended him to take.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
