Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My gastroenterologist just prescribed Welchol for diarrhea. The information leaflet says it lowers cholesterol and blood sugar. I have no history of high cholesterol. I take Matformin for very well controlled high blood sugar, although other meds have caused severe low blood sugar. I don t understand how Welchol will treat diarrhea and if it s safe knowing my propensity for hypoglycemia.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of diarrhea which seems to be due to acute gastroenteritis and electrolyte imbalance in body. It could be due to poor immunity and increased susceptibility of getting infected. Need not to owrry. Yes you can start with Welchol which is right medication. I would suggest you not to panic at all. You should start treatment with combination of fluoroquinolones and ornidazole. Visit gastroenterologist once and get it examined and start treatment after prescription. You should get intravenous fluid administration as well. Avoid hot, sharp and spicy food. You should take banana on daily basis and light food. Drink plenty of fluids to rehydrate body fluids.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
