Is A Carpal Tunnel Operation Required For Tingling Numbness In Thumb?
Yes, I am scheduled for corpal tunnel operation on my left hand & I have second thoughts after reading what some readers have to say about recuperation time. My thumb is constantly tingling/numb, sometimes the same feeling is in part of my index. Does this constitute the need to get the operation done?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
You don't seem to have pain or any difficulty in movement. Mostly surgery is the only way to relieve pressure on median nerve in cases of recurrent pain events, numbness to the grade of losing sense of touch or difficult or no movements (after surgery recurrence is seen in few cases). Common strategy is to treat conservatively (with medicines, local injections of steroids or physiotherapy as per need). In case of no improvement surgery is inevitable. I would suggest to get a second opinion of a hand surgeon before going for surgery.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
