Is A Huge Bump On The Back Of The Head Post An Injury A Concern?

Hi, I fell down about 3 hours ago and hit my head pretty hard. I have a very large bump on the back of my head. I ve had a cold pack on it and the swelling is not going down. I feel fine, except for some bruising elsewhere. Should I be concerned about this bump? I am a 55 year old woman. Do you need any other information?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A bump on scalp after a fall is normal and may just be local tissue response to injury. It may not pose any problems. However, if you feel intense headache, dizziness, loss of consciousness, you see the doctor for examination and a CT scan.

In the meantime, you may try the following:

- Continue with ice pack placement

- Take an anti-inflammatory pain drug like tylenol

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mbuomboh Veranso
