Is A Pacemaker Advisable For An Elderly Person With Slow Heart Rate?
my dad is 96 years old he went in hospital on Monday for fluid in his body particularly around his heart they were able to remove the fluid, but his heart rate is slow the first thought was that it maybe from his bp meds but after a day of observation with the bp meds they found there was no change in fact it was even slower, they are concerned of him passing out if he comes home the question now is him getting a pace maker but they are considering the pro s and con s????
In normal people sinus node is controlling the heart rate and rhythm. As we age the sinus node can become lazy and can result in sick sinus syndrome. This can result in a low heart rate and fatigue. If the low heart rate is making the person tired and results in recurrent loss of consciousness (symptomatic bradycardia) then it needs to be addressed. Hence for him the most appropriate method is implanting a pacemaker to control the heart rate. Definitely the pacemaker is the best option available.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
