Is A Scratch By Dog On The Leg Leaving Teeth Marks On Skin A Cause For Concern?
Hi, I have a question. I went out today to get my mail and out of no where 2 dogs started barking at me. I was trying to get away from one but the other scratch my leg with his teeth a little and left some teeth marks. However, I did not bleed. Should I be concerned of rabies or swim thing like that? I didn t make sure if the dog that bit me had any problems but the other dog that was in front of me looked healthy.
* As per my clinical experience, the post exposure prophylaxis of the rabies depends upon the patient`s vaccination status along with biting animal if available for observation or not.
* The WHO recommendations is to
- wash the area immediately under running tap water vigorously, which makes transmission of viral pathogens very very limited
- apply sterile dressing with Neomycin cream if available
- get examined by your primary care provider for the discussion about the need of anti rabies vaccination if at all it occurs in your case.
* The dog can be rabid, looking normal on first appearance, and hence one should not neglect approaching the primary care physician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
