Is A Second Mesh Surgery Safe For Recurring Hernia?
I have had a hernia repair surgery before and now my Dr. recommends a second surgery as the hernia has returned. I am scheduled for surgery in a few days, I now have trouble with bowel movements and hemroids is this from the hernia and is a second mesh surgery safe? YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I don’t think that hemorrhoids and bowel movements issues are related to your hernia or hernia surgery. These two organs are separated and there is no manipulation on bowels during surgery.
Hernia surgery for recurrent hernia may be a bit more challenging for surgeon but still this is a routine surgery and there should not be problems about it. Also, it would be good to have it done laparoscopically, if this is available in your institution. Since for recurrent hernia, laparoscopic surgery is the most optimal option since it is less invasive. Also, you should take into account that hernia may become incarcerated in future so it is better to manage it as soon as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
