Is A Small, Shallow Puncture On Heel Due To Puppy Bite A Cause For Concern?

My puppy s teeth left a small , shallow puncture on my heel while playing with my foot, no blood though, but it keeps licking it whenever im walking. The dog has yet to be vacinated. should I be worried? When do symptoms of rabies kick-in and when is it too late to get anti-rabies injected?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello,
i can understand your concern.
i would advise you to take anti rabies vaccination as per the schedule of 0,3,7,14,28 as early as possible.
it is highly recommended that the dog be vaccinated.
the time between the infection and the development of symptoms usyually is 2 to 6 weeks.
licking of the wound is highly contagious.
wash the wound thoroughly under running water with soap. the wound should be cleaned with betadine and left open.
rabies if developed is nearly fatal. so i would suggest taking of the vaccination.
since the dog is your pet ,risk of rabies is very low, but the guidelines suggest taking of vaccination.
hope you are satisfied with the response.do get back to us for further queries.
