Is Abdominal Tab Safe For Treating Fluid Retention In Liver Cancer Patient?

My father in law has liver cancer and continues to eat a lot of salt which causes him to retain water. I tell him to cut out more salt or at least get outside and sweat to get some of the water and toxins out of his body. He tells me that is trapped and that the only thing he can do is to keep getting an abdominal tap. Can you help me clear up this argument.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the abdominal tapping is reserved for certain clinical situations as:
- Massive ascites
- Ascites causing breathlessness due to severe diaphragm compression
- Threat of systemic sepsis from the same
- Patient desire
- Failure of medical therapy
- Definite corrective surgery not possible or contraindicated

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
