Is Alcohol Advisable While On Plaquenil For Rheumatoid Arthritis?

I take generic Plaquenil for my RA. I had several bouts of diarrhea after taking my dose. It doesn t always happen. It is quite severe when it happens. Should i discontinue it or try again. Also is it safe to consume small amounts of alcohol while on this medication. Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Plaquenil is a brand name of Hydroxychloroquine. Mild diarrhea is commonly seen with Plaquenil especially on the initial days. In most of the patients it is well tolerated and it's not required to change the drug. You can wait for few days for spontaneous recovery. You can take probiotics like Vizylac for symptomatic relief. If you can’t tolerate the drug even with supportive measure better to change to alternatives after discussing with your physician. Small amount of alcohol can be taken along with Plaquenil. Heavy bout of drinking not recommended and may cause severe reactions.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
