Hi,I am Raju.A.T (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband is being treated by a neurologist. he has had many blood tests, MRI s, CT Scans, EMG, Nerve conduction studies and we still have no diagnosis. He has almost all of the symptoms of MG but the lab work doesn t show the antibodies that prove it. Last week the Dr started him on mestinon. I guess my question is, since my husband also drinks, is this safe? what is the probability that this is ALS instead of Myasthenia Gravis? He also has really severe Dupytrens contracture .
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
So far as your main query is concerned, it is better to avoid taking alcohol while someone is on Mestinon as alcohol increases some side effects of Mestinon. Regarding the diagnosis, injection of the chemical edrophonium chloride (Tensilon) may result in a sudden, although temporary, improvement in your muscle strength. This is an indication that you may have myasthenia gravis.
It would also be beneficial to check for myasthenic antibodies in the blood. So it will be better to talk to his physician regarding these tests.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Prabhash Verma
