Is An Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery A Safe Procedure?

Hi - my dad is 89 and has had 9 angioplasties and 3 stents. He was being considered for an aortic value replacement with non-invasive procedure but the doctor said at 50 percent heart function he was not bad enough and was going to see if his heart function changed in the next 6 mo. That doesn t sound right to me. 50 percent seems low. Is this another way of saying its a risk / reward trade off situation?

Hello

yes, aortic valve replacement is a safe surgery, but as considering your father age that is 89 yrs, you have to consult with cardiologist first for fitness for surgery. As per age risk is more in surgery, but with fitness you can go for surgery. If he is not responding to medications then surgery is the preferred option.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.
