Is An Elevated Level Of Amylase A Cause For Concern?

My amylase levels are elevated at 164 with the upper range limit being 124. I have to go back for follow up tests in a week and I m nervous. Could this be anything serious? My initial visit was for discomfort (not pain) in the right side of my lower abdomen. It feels more like a pulled or tightened muscle than pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Amylase level of 164 IU/L indicates it is increased above normal. Generally, it is elevated in pancreatic disorders like pancreatitis. It is not a serious disorder but is an inflammation of pancreas, which needs to be treated.
The underlying cause needs to be confirmed by other following tests, after which appropriate treatment could be instituted.
1. Serum lipase level.
2. Ultrasound scan of the abdomen.
Kindly get the above investigations done and consult Physician for proper evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
