Is An Ultrasound Advisable For Discerning The Extent Of Hamstring Injury?

i had a serious hamstring injury April 30/16 and have been receiving physio for about 7 weeks now. The physio now thinks there was more damage than initially suspected. My FP has just ordered an ultrasound (in lieu for waiting a long time for an MRI). Will ultrasound be able to discern the nature of the tear or maybe a detachment? I had more soreness near the pelvic bond (vs the knee). If there is a detachment, how long can this (tear) be left without too much muscle atrophy. I was active but not an athlete. I have been asked to do hamstring stretches (2/day); hamstring curls (with 2lb ankle wt; 3 sets of 15). I was asked to use a 5 lb ankle wt but found it difficult and stopped; and balance exercises (which are difficult with my eyes closed). Am I on the right track? I also have felt dizzy from time to time so my FP has ordered some heart tests as well. My BP is normal but they think there might be an arrythmia that I might not be aware of.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

You may get an ultrasound done, however, MRI is best option to delineate any soft tissue injury. Tear in muscle heals up with proper rest and medication. Since, you are undergoing physiotherapy, atrophy of muscle is not likely to happen. You need to consult your cardiologist for cardiac investigations to rule out any cardiac ailment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
