Is Anesthesia Used For Endoscopy Safe For A Diabetic?
my husband is beimg put to sleep for the first time his age is 54 it is for an endoscopy his gastro doc has ordered it what can we expect he is very scared and has already went to pre op but he has other health concerns he is diabetic heart failure and has liver disease the questiom is will he wake up again?
Your husband might be put to moderate amount of sedation with the help of Propofol and anxiolytics like benzodiazepines and pain medication to decrease the discomfort during endoscopy by opioid. All these are safer drugs and he will be out of anesthesia and will wake up may be even during the procedure. Though he has diabetes, heart problems and liver problems, these drugs are given in low doses to facilitate the recovery from anesthesia.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
