How dangerous is Antabuse to a person who has had a mild heart attack and stents ? he is an alcoholic and has had a seizure because of it and has been hospitalized twice? He wants to quit but will not go to rehab or AA meetings. He is 64 and drinks for days in a row without sobering up. I would think the drug would be less dangerous than the path he is on now. Thanks
Pretty dangerous. The effect of antabuse PLUS alcohol is supposed to trigger a very unpleasant and stressful reaction. Heart attacks are reported in this context EVEN IN PEOPLE NOT KNOWN TO HAVE HEART DISEASE. The use of antabuse in someone with heart disease has to be considered Very Carefully. Hope this has helped.
