Is Anti Rabies Injection Recommended For A Scratch From A Cat?

Hello Doc. My husband cuddled our cat this morning and he wasn't sure if it bite him or it was just a nail scratch from its feet. The wound looks like just a scratch. It has an anti-rabies vaccine (Biocan R) given last May 2014. Does my husband need to have an anti rabies shot?

Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
See, domestic cats or dogs are generally vaccinated. So, generally when they bite somebody or leaves a scratch, generally we do not recommend anti-rabies vaccination.
Generally, for cats and dogs, antirabies vaccine is validated for six months. Contact your veterinary doctor for it. If the animal is vaccinated, your husband does not need an anti rabies course.
Otherwise, its safe to get anti rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin if required.

Hope i have answered your question.
If you have any further questions i will be happy to help.
Regards
