Is Antibiotic Treatment For SIBO A Permanent Solution Or Can It Recur?
hi. Is antibiotic treatment for SIBO a permanent solution or does it recur. If it is chronic, do you need to restart the antibiotics, and how many times? What about the kinds of antibiotics? My MD originally prescribed Rifaximin, but that is expensive. He then suggested I check into either Flagyl and Augmentin or Flagyl and Doxycycline. What to do?
Antibiotic treatment is very effective in controlling SIBO. However, there is chance that symptoms may recur after discontinuing antibiotics, which may necessitate long-term antibiotic therapy.
The frequency and severity of SIBO vary greatly from person to person. You can also take probiotics along with antibiotics to restore normal gut flora.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Lekshmi Rita Venugopal, General & Family Physician
