Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am suffering from anxiety last week when i had my BP checked the readings were 174/80 when I felt like i had a panic attach. Thereafter I tried to calm myself down and took another reading after 10 Minutes then My BP got down to 165/75. Could anxiety be causing all this or should I really be concerned about this?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern... Yes anxiety could be the cause for elevated blood pressure. You have been under stress last week too. Stress causes elevation of heart rate & pumping causing elevation of upper blood pressure. Your Both blood pressure readings 174/80 & 165/75 had upper(systolic) blood pressure increased whereas lower (diastolic) blood pressure was normal on both the occasions. Isolated increase of systolic blood pressure is not as dangerous as elevated diastolic blood pressure or elevation of both upper & lower blood pressure. But it should be checked regularly as constant isolated increase of systolic blood pressure can be caused by underlying conditions such as arterystiffness, heart valve problems or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
