Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
HI. I m just doing a little research. My daughter just started dating this young man who was recently medically discharged from the air force. They found that he had a dissecting aortic aneurysm, which they repaired; some cardiac arrhythmias, which they ablated and then inserted a pacemaker and defibrillator. He has balance issues and is quite tall. I m wondering if he has a genetic condition since he is a relatively young man (34) for the extent of his different ailments.
Aortic dissection is a very serious and mortal condition which is caused by multiple factors such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, genetic diseases etc. It is commonly occured in elders who are prone to both hypertension and generalized atherosclerosis. However; dissection in young people is rare but possible.
Patient you described is consistent with Marfan syndrome. Patients with Marfan syndrome (who are also quite tall) have problems related with connective tissue which is very important for fortifying arterial walls. Due to impaired connective tissues, they are prone to aortic dilatation and dissections in early period of their lives. Cardiac and ocular abnormalities are also expected. Therefore, they require frequent and thorough examinations for all possible complications.
I hope your patient will not experience any more health issues.
