Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Asymmetrical Crying Face Syndrome Related To Abnormal Cardiac, Renal And Genital Systems?
I have a 12-month old daughter. She was born with exactly the defect described as I read about asymmetrical crying face syndrome . We were told by the doctors at her birth that it was not due to birth injury (I had a c-section) as it only involves the mouth and not the eyes or forehead. We have been told since that as long as she nursed well it should be purely cosmetic. I am reading now, however, that cardiac abnormalities and abnormalities of the renal system, reproductive organs and urinary tract can also be involved. Should I call her doctor and request further testing?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, you are correct. Asymmetrical crying face syndrome is frequently associated other abnormalities:
-Cardiovascular.
-Head and neck.
-Musculoskeletal
-Respiratory.
-Gastrointestinal
-Nervous system and genitourinary system.
It was initially thought to be an isolated finding. But, more recently, doctors have learned that it is associated with anomalies in other parts of the body. Every patient with asymmetrical crying face syndrome does not have something wrong in all of the above systems. Each patient is different. I recommend that you take the information you have about this syndrome to your babies' doctor and discuss it with him/her.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
