Is Bleeding Followed By Clear Fluid Discharge In A Wound On Head Normal?

Today I conked my head on a metal sculpture on accident. I know it sounds completely stupid, but yeah, when I stood up and massaged the back of my head to calm the initial ringing pain, I noticed that my hair felt wet. When I looked at my hand, it was covered with blood. As it is a head wound, I know it s normal for it to bleed a lot, and thankfully it s a small cut. Hopefully it doesn t have to be stitched up. Three hours later, it s stopped bleeding, but now a clear fluid is present on the wound. As well as trace amounts of blood. Is this normal and what can I do to heal this wound? I don t want to cut my hair. Thank you

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Scalp wound has a tendency to bleed more due to tight subcutaneous and richly vascular tissue. The clear fluid at wound is serum and edema fluid which is normal. This suggests that inflammation to heal wound, has started. This serum comes out through capillary leak.

You have also noticed or you can notice now swelling at injury site. This is also due to edema and serum in scalp layers. Do not repeatedly touch it or remove it because it is needed for formation of scab. This scab heals the wound. If you notice creamy yellow coloured, foul or non-foul smelling thick fluid, it means pus. In case of it, you must show to ER and get your wound cleaned and dressed. Maintain hygiene. There is no need to cut hair if you do not have pus.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care
