Is Blood Sugar Level 280 After Food Dangerous?

My husband was just diagnosed with diabetes on friday. He is going to meet with the diatician soon. But for now...his blood sugar is running around 217 fasting and around 280 after his meals. Should we just wait for next week or is this an emergency?

Hi, I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.

Dear Mam, The blood sugar levels you have mentioned high to normal. Its better to start diet control and exercises which is first mode of management. Its not a medical emergency for a week. Not to worry much. Meanwhile let him follow the guidelines.

* Avoid single high concentrated meals.
* Small frequent meals more times in a day.
* Food high in fibre content like vegetables, whole pulses, fruits, etc.
Do not eat at all:--
Sugar, jam, syrups, honey, sweets, chocolates, fruit juices, ice creams, cold drinks, glucose drinks, cakes and pastries, sweet biscuits, puddings and protein powder with sugar.
Eat in moderation:--
Bread, chapatis, oat porridge, cornflakes (No sugar), Cheese, butter, Noodles or spaghetti, macroni, Thick soups, Milk & milk products, Chicken, lean meat, fish.
Exercise daily for atleast 30-40minutes.

Hope this guides you
Thank you.

Diabetologist Dr. Saumya Mittal 's  Response
Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

As per my opinion, you should be started on some medicine like metformin almost immediately. At those levels of sugars, diet control alone is most likely to fail unless the diet currently is too lavish.

Atleast moderate physical exercise should be added to the regime, even if you want to try to go for diet control alone at first.

Please do let us know the blood sugar after food only if it is 2 hours after food. Also doing an HbA1C and a lipid profile will be a good option as well.

Please follow the opinion of your diabetician. Changing medicines on the basis of just one sugar reading is not advisable/acceptable

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.

Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.
